I'm struggling to believe this is real. I know it is, but wth. Should they shut down youth justice facilities? If they're not doing time for this, what would they get time for?
Not connected to the diagnosis part: there are many examples in Tassie of kids continually breaking the law and effectively getting let off the hook each time. I'm a big fan of rehab as opposed to punishment, but rehab as a strategy doesn't work without the rehab.
I’m not sure we need to spend time diagnosing the problem, isn’t it simply the case that Starmer has ordered that far fewer people get custodial sentences? Cheaper that way. Like letting all those men out of jail early, no matter if they are going home to beat their wives
I guess that was my point, it really doesn't help. I am all for rehabilitation but it should take place in a facility that keeps the public safe. Unfortunately our facilities seem to foster crime rather than rehabilitate. There is also little acknowledgment that rehabilitation isn't always successful - it's been found that psychopaths actually get better at being deceptive through therapy. And many progressive policies were badly compromised albeit well intended- and I think this is one of them. I am all for empathy, we have far too little true empathy in this world (empathy in my view is not the same as permissiveness - and humans have a tendency to swing between two extremes). One of the many reasons why I think human progress is a utopia. It assumes that all people have good intentions. It's naïve at best.
I don’t think any progressive would think his reasoning was based on progressive thinking. I think it’s quite the opposite. A male judge let three rapists off the hook. A tale as old as time…but now he can use therapeutic speech to let them get away with it rather than blabber on about what the girls were wearing
Yes, I agree. But I think the therapising of everything works with the progressive culture of looking for empathy in the wrong places which has created the environment that gives judges new reasons to excuse sexual abuse.

Very insightful. Spot on.

Therapeutic reasoning as retributive justice.
The girls severely assault the boys claiming PTSD, anxiety and depression which was worsened by the judge's toxic empathy.
